Our History
In 1990 my husband Curtis (Corky) was in a serious motorcycle
accident that rendered him disabled for 2-1/2 years. My daughter
Erica and son Patrick were nine and fourteen years old at
this time. We were in the middle of building our first home,
which is our residence today. During this time, my job was
eliminated. I could not put the stress on my family so I did
not tell them for a couple of weeks, not until I found other
work.
In only a few weeks I found myself working three part-time
jobs. I also opened a small store on South Elm Street in downtown
Greensboro called Jewels by Julie. Things were a bit sluggish
in the downtown area back then; however, with my other jobs,
we managed to keep our heads above water. Later, I was able
to purchase the building where Jewels by Julie was located
from a wonderful lady named Della Kernodle.
In 1995 Corky was well enough to return to work as a building
contractor. We and another couple, Teresa and Gary Richardson,
leased an old department store (the old Thalhimers building)
a few buildings down from Jewels by Julie. Later, we bought
the Richardson's share of the business.
In January 2002, we sold our downtown properties and purchased
a 45,000 square foot building along I-40. Sports Unlimited
built this building (later bought out by Jumbo Sports) and
filed for bankruptcy in 2000. The building sat empty for one
year. On April 1, 2001, we were ready for business. We moved
90 percent of our dealers from downtown to 6428 Burnt Poplar
Road, Greensboro, NC, parallel to Interstate 40, with over
150 dealers occupying spaces. Since that time, our business
has grown tremendously and we're proud to say that we've had
a waiting list for antique dealers to rent space in Antique
Market Place.
